Cathy Dauler was a Founder and Co-coordinator of Community Volunteer Caretakers of State College Flower Beds, aka "The Weeders".
Many residents know State College has been designated a Tree City in recognition of our well-maintained urban forest. Although the public flowerbeds may not receive any national recognition, they also enhance the community, adding visual interest to our streets and neighborhoods. The types of flowers and designs change each year.
The Borough public works department is responsible for the plantings but it has been the dedication of many volunteers over the years that has assured the beds are taken care of throughout the growing season.
In the late 1990s, Marty Starling and I offered to organize volunteers to tend the flowerbeds. Although the Public Works department had planted the flowers in years past, it was not always possible for the staff to find time in their summer schedule to attend to maintenance.
The volunteers, many from Borough neighborhoods and often assisted by Master Gardeners and Penn State alumni, became known as The Weeders. They are known now as Caretakers and in the past two years they have also helped to plant the flowers in the spring.
